Pluscarden Abbey is situated close to the B9010 (the back road between Forres and Elgin). It is the only medieval monastery in Britain still being used for its original purpose and is inhabited be a community of Catholic Benedictine monks.
The abbey was founded in the 13th Century and as you can imagine is steeped in history (far too much to mention here) but there is a good display of all it has been through at the abbey itself. The architecture is a must see in itself, as well as the beautiful stained glass windows, the rural and peaceful setting and being able to see the monks in their day to day life make Pluscarden a well worth and unique place to visit for anyone.
The monks also run a retreat programme with separate facilities for males and females. More information on these and more about the place can be found on the Pluscarden Abbey website.
